Baldys Pies has only been in business for a few months but is already celebrating two gongs at the British Pie Awards.

And it was Baldys Kiev, a big favorite, who particularly impressed the judges.

The pie which contains garlic marinated chicken, herb béchamel, garlic, thyme and panko herb crumbs, was put in the chicken and vegetable / herb category, which impressed so much the judges they defended Baldys against 34 other enticing contenders.

The company also received the gold award for its Mexican pie which features minced meat and chili beef brisket, scotch caps, cilantro, smoked paprika and panko breadcrumbs.

Standish co-owner Alex Melling said, “Chris (Vernazza) and I are chefs, not pastry chefs. This is why our pies are so unique. We were both thrilled when we found out it was amazing to win both awards.

“Our hard work has put us in a position where we are nationally recognized, I think we are the only award winning pie company in Wigan which is great for us. This now puts us on the map and we can continue to grow and expand our business in different areas. ”

Baldys launched on Clayton Street earlier this year and when Chris and Alex started the business they each had £ 300 to start and operate it. Alex said: “After the year the hospitality industry has had, we didn’t have a lot of money, we were working very few hours with limited pay.

“So we started with nothing, doing two weeks at the Billinge Arms and then moving to the Crown in Standish before setting up our store.”

The annual pie ceremony received nearly 1,000 nominations from across the country.

The contest included 23 enticing categories, ranging from classics to beef and beer or steak and kidneys, but also opened the contest to those who cater to more specialized food preferences, like sans and vegan products.

Matthew O’Callaghan, President of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association and host of the British Pie Awards, said: “It’s safe to say that after being canceled due to Covid, the British Pie Awards are back and better than never ! We had some spectacular pies this year, and Baldys Kiev beat some very tough competition. These awards celebrate the craftsmanship of British pie lovers across the country, and I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone and pie lover involved! “.
