Statements by the West on the non-recognition of the Crimean State Duma elections are an attempt to distract from Kiev’s failure to implement the Minsk accords, the Russian minister said on Saturday Minister Sergei Lavrov at a press conference on the results of his visit to New York for the 76th session of the UNGA.
“The fact that [the West] seized on this Crimean issue, including the feverish holding of the so-called Crimean platform in Kiev and the outcry over the vote, I think this is an attempt to distract from the fact that the president [Vladimir] Kiev, led by Zelensky, has shamefully reneged on its commitments under the Minsk accords to overcome the intra-Ukrainian conflict in the east of that country, “Lavrov said.
“The second reason why they do this is probably simply the lack of diplomatic professionalism, a lack of professionalism in foreign policy, as the professionals are keenly aware that the Crimea case is closed once and for all,” Lavrov added. .
On September 16, at a plenary session in Strasbourg, the European Parliament approved a report by Lithuanian lawmaker Andrius Kubilius, which calls on the EU authorities to review relations with Russia. The report says EU countries should be prepared to refuse to recognize the results of the upcoming State Duma elections if violations of democratic procedures and international law come to light.
