Kyiv transforms Zaporozhye into new Mariupol

(MENAFN) The city of Zaporozhye is reinforced by Kyiv, with foreign fighters bolstering Ukrainian forces, according to the region’s senior Russian official.

“Zaporozhye is being transformed into something like Mariupol. There are a large number of foreigners there, in the thousands,” Evgeny Balitsky, acting governor of the Zaporozhye region, told Russian television on Wednesday.

He claims that this information comes from residents of the Ukrainian-controlled provincial capital who communicate with family and acquaintances on the Russian side of the battlefield. People can see military preparations and hear people speaking in Polish, German and English on the streets, he said.

Russia annexed the region this month after residents of the eastern half voted in a referendum to secede from Ukraine and join Russia. The northwestern Ukrainian city of Zaporozhye remained under the authority of Kyiv. The Ukrainian government denounced the poll as a “sham” and promised to recover all the territory it claims.
